Senator Vitter on Congressman Charlie Melancon's Stimulus Vote

Congressman Melancon Sides With Obama and Pelosi Over Louisiana

Charlie Melancon not only voted in favor of President Obama's abysmal failure of a stimulus package, he went so far as to say it was "the right thing to do" so as "not to embarrass President Obama."

Now, instead of admitting that supporting a multi-trillion dollar spending bill was bad for our state and country, Melancon and his liberal friends in Congress are attacking Senator Vitter for having the intestinal fortitude to stand up to Reid and Pelosi and vote against the bill in the interests of Louisiana.

The following has been pulled from a newsletter set out by the Office of Senator David Vitter:

Earlier this week marked the one-year anniversary of President Obama's $787 billion "stimulus" package.

When this bill was proposed a year ago, I offered an amendment to remove over $50 billion of its most egregious waste and engage Washington in a serious discussion about runaway spending.

Sadly, that amendment was defeated, but I'm not done fighting. Can I count on your support to keep pushing forward?

Not only was this bill full of runaway Washington spending, but it also woefully underserves the people of Louisiana. Only one half a percent of the overall package - less than $4 billion - will go towards our state. You read correctly; that's one half of a single percent of the bill that Louisianians will see.

My opponent, Charlie Melancon, not only voted in favor of the stimulus, but he said it was "the right thing to do" so as "not to embarrass President Obama."

Now, instead of admitting that supporting a trillion dollar spending bill was bad for our state and country, Melancon and the Democrats are attacking me for voting against it.

I won't vote one way or another just because Washington politicians tell me to. I did vote against the stimulus – and I would again today - because it was the right thing to do for Louisiana!

Instead of voting for massive trillion dollar stimulus proposals like Charlie Melancon did, we should look for real ways to create jobs and rejuvenate our economy. My "No Cost Stimulus" bill does just that by creating over 2 million jobs without sending our children and future generations into further debt.

Please help me continue standing up for fiscal restraint - and continue taking Louisiana's message to Washington - by returning as Louisiana's Senator. You can help me do so by making a secure online donation right now.

It's critical for our nation to have principled, conservative leadership in the Senate. Please help me build a strong foundation for my re-election by making a special gift of $25, $50, $100 or whatever you can give at www.DavidVitter.com/donate right now.

By doing so, you'll be supporting my efforts to continue standing up for common sense leadership and solutions - and most importantly, standing for the people of Louisiana.

As always, thanks in advance for your help.

Senator David Vitter (R-LA)
