Honduras Crisis: A Fleeting Moment of Sanity
Valladares Resigns From Human Rights Commission Over Honduras Hypocrisy
Armando Valladares, former U.S. Ambassador to the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations, resigned from his position as Secretary General of the Human Rights Foundation, due to stanch disagreement with the organization's stance on Honduras. The former diplomat and Cuban prisoner of conscience resigned suddenly after discovering that the organization had joined the rest of the world in condemning the actions taken by the Honduran government last Sunday, June 28th, 2009. In his letter of resignation, Valladares is addressing Thor Halvorssen of the Human Rights Foundation. Dear Thor:
The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) note regarding the events in Honduras does not reflect the truth nor does it relate, historically speaking, to what actually occurred and how. I am currently in Italy, so I have little time to go into an extensive analysis. But, President Zelaya was and is a traitor to democracy. He was elected by deceiving his compatriots, and after coming to power by that deception, he turned ideologically and began the plan to destroy democracy in Honduras—just as Chavez did in Venezuela, and Morales did in Bolivia, and Correa is doing in Ecuador. Manuel Zelaya is part of the vast neo-communist conspiracy that aims to capture Latin America. The ploy has been the same: they use elections to come to power, then they change the constitution, dissolving parliament, and perpetuating their reign, and ultimately they end up declaring themselves Marxists, like Evo Morales.
What Zelaya tried to do toward these ends was illegal. He wanted to change the Constitution in order to reelect himself. The Supreme Court warned him that this maneuver was unconstitutional and therefore illegal. The Honduran Congress also warned him that this pretext violated the Honduran Constitution and was, therefore, illegal. Yet, with the support and money from a foreign Government (all election materials arrived from Venezuela in a plane sent by Chavez), and notwithstanding warnings from the Supreme Court, Zelaya continued with this plan to destroy democracy in his country—where the rule of law ruled. And based on that rule of law, the Supreme Court ordered the Armed Forces (who do not exist to defend the President, but to defend the Constitution) to arrest Zelaya and expel him from the country. That is not a coup d’état; there are no military officers governing in Honduras.
Meanwhile, when the OEA (Organization of American States) observed Zelaya acting illegally they did not say a word. When the Supreme Court warned him that his pretext was illegal, the OEA and those who now scratch their heads, contemplated in complicit silence just as this traitor, Zelaya, tried to sink his country into totalitarianism and turn it into another Venezuela, or another Bolivia, or another Cuba.
The HRF’s declaration is historically wrong. They are allowing themselves to get caught up in the same cowardly complicity as those who, due to lack of courage, refuse to act or dare to tell it like it is. I knew nothing of this declaration, or its publication, which I have come to know now in Italy.
For this reason—my absolute disagreement with this declaration—I hereby irrevocably resign from my position as Chairman of the Human Rights Foundation, and any other position within this organization, be it as a member of the International Directive or any other. I beg of you, as President in charge of HRF daily records, chart a course for this resignation of mine, as I too will do my part.
